We utilized picture books in whole groups to model how to infer in order to identify themes as a life lesson the author is trying to teach, as well as how to choose examples from the story that the author used to convey the theme. These are deep concepts! The students then worked with partners to buddy read another picture book, infer to identify theme, and explain how the theme was conveyed. Students had an opportunity to be creative by making popsicle stick puppets and putting on short shows to share the themes from the books they read. The puppet shows were very cute and fun!
