Third grade writing directions from gimel to another room in the building. Tomorrow, groups will trade directions to try and find the room. This activity supports students in understanding the usefulness of cardinal and intermediate directions in locating places.

A Thank You to Our Veterans

We dedicated this week's social studies classes to honoring our veterans and reflecting on their importance. Please come see the students' work hanging in kitah gimel. 

School Election Results & Electoral College

Congratulations to Star Spangled Liberty, one of the third grade parties, for winning the final election today. 

Conducting our school elections was the highlight of the week. The primary between all 16 parties occurred during Tuesday's recess and the final election between the winner of each grade took place today. Students campaigned in the hallways, completed voter registration, created photo ID cards, and experienced waiting in a long line! Congratulations to one of the third grade political parties, Star Spangled Liberty, for winning the intermediate election today. I hope your child enjoyed his or her election experience. 

This week we also debriefed the U.S. election by simulating how the electoral votes are tracked. We first reviewed the basics of the electoral college; then students were individually called on to select a random state card to announce its name and how many electoral votes it has. We predicted if the state went red or blue and then determined if either President Obama or Governor Romney won that state. Students charted the information by coloring in squares of a table red or blue before starting to transfer the information to a U.S. map.
