App Recommendation: Number Bonds by Crystal Springs

The number bonds apps are available for iPads and cost $1.99 each. Both allow students to practice number bonds, also known as fact families, and further develop their mathematical reasoning. The apps support the Singapore Math approach that we will use this year in third grade. Singapore Math helps students develop logical and often time-saving approaches to help make sense of math problems.

Number Bonds

A number bond shows the relationship between a number and the parts that combine to make it. Number bonds are an important foundation for thinking about numbers and finding part-whole relationships.

Number bonds allow students to break down, or decompose, numbers into friendly numbers, ones that are easier to work with in the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Numbers such as 10, 100, and 1000 are especially friendly, so we try to work with multiples of 10 as often as possible. Friendly numbers lend themselves to mental math, helping students to calculate complex problems in their heads.

Another option is to use the addition and subtraction app to review skills this summer.
